The Woolff Gallery is delighted to welcome the return of Charlotte Cory's Visitorians, and this time we are treated to a little background story about these curious folk. Read on for an introduction from Charlotte Cory:
“People often ask me to divulge the stories of my Visitorian characters. For a long time I resisted, encouraging viewers of the pictures to divine the hidden biographies of my subjects for themselves. I thought they should be allowed to tell their own stories although occasionally I have been known to supply hints, chiefly in the titles I attached to the pictures. Or occasionally, when I have been cornered at an exhibition and asked searching questions I have found myself revealing the secrets and scandals of their lives. Secrets and scandals that on reflection might better have remained hidden.
It often felt uncomfortable, finding myself the reluctant purveyor of unsubstantiated tittle-tattle, conjecture and disrespectful gossip. About my own beloved creations! You can be sure this was not at all what I ever set out to do...
I am, and always have been, extremely deferential towards my Visitorians. But now, in TELLING TAILS, I have decided to throw all caution to the wind and reveal to the world some of these hidden biographies.
With Mr Wilkins’s Triumph, Miss Pinkney’s Revenge & Other Stories, you will learn of thwarted ambition, blackmail, astonishing romantic adventures and commercial successes, along with other extraordinary achievements and unforgettable accounts of remarkable stubbornness, thievery and a fair amount of derring-do. Oh, and also a few harps and harpists.
In other words, here for the first time you too may witness the true lives and loves of the Visitorians.” Charlotte Cory, December 2020
All signed artworks are are priced at £485 each, they are all framed in identical narrow black frames so look great as a set. There is also a book which accompanies the exhibition and tells the tales of these fabulous Visitorians.
