I have works showing at the London Art Fair in Islington this week. The Elgin Piper, Gentleman Badger and a collaged Prince Hamlet, to name but a few. A post-Darwinian universe of reworked, recycled, collaged and montaged Victorian photography and taxidermy in which the animals are clearly in charge. Her pictures have been described as exquisite short stories, told without words. She, though, has plenty of words. She has a PhD in Medieval Literature and owns an enormous 1860s Columbian printing press with an iron eagle on top and acres of type she has collected up/salvaged over the years. Some of the unique fonts on this website were printed on this press. Last time she moved house, she had to get rid of the kitchen to create space for it. Her Visitorians, though, would feel quite at home. Her studio is full of aspidistras and she tries not to collect taxidermy but they seem to collect her and she has several parrots, a sparrow, a monkey, a tiger's head, a baby giraffe and a puku (a rare African antelope which she is hoping to save from extinction). She had three novels published by Faber and Faber (The Unforgiving, The Laughter of Fools and The Guest). Her comedy series on BBC Radio 4 include The Wonderful World of Allaetitia (Scenes from a 1960s Childhood), the sequal: The Brave New World of Allaetitia (Further Scenes from a 1960s Childhood); Snap! - a series of 5 dramatic monologues;The Day I Finished Off Charlotte Bronte a play about Charlotte Bronte's unfinished novel; Mangosteen Mania a play about the last days of the Raj and the four part comic drama Thinking of Leaving Your Husband? This is scheduled to be repeated in March 2013 followed by the next series, Find the Perfect Partner 4 U which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 April 2013. Charlotte Cory lives in Greenwich, between the Park and the River, where her work can be found at her workshop attached to the beautiful Green Parrot Gallery which is now only open by appointment. All sales of artwork are now through the Long & Ryle Gallery. Her Visitorian jewellery and designer silks are much sought after and her pictures have been exhibited widely and can be found in many important collections - including the Royal Photographic Collection at Windsor. The Sir John Soane's Museum has commissioned special limited edition artworks for their shop and the Globe Theatre sell a whole range of merchandise based on the Shakespearean Visitorians. She is a lifelong vegetarian and keen cyclist and she travels all over the world on her folding sky blue Brompton bicycle in pursuit of her work. She was given her first camera - a black plastic Kodak Box Brownie - at the age of six (a freebie from Shell petrol!) when she started obsessively photographing sheep (see below).
